Story: Canoe traditions
Te Uri-o-Hau and Te Taoū of Ngāti Whātua claim that the Māhuhu-ki-te-rangi canoe landed at the Kaipara Heads on Tāporapora Island. Rongomai, the captain, was subsequently drowned in a fishing accident and his body beaten by waves on rocks. The area became known as Te Ākitanga-o-Rongomai – the beating of Rongomai.
