Gannet colony at Cape Kidnappers
If navigators knew what to look for, the sea was full of clues when land was nearby. Seabirds such as gannets, petrels, frigate birds and terns roost on land at night and feed at sea by day, and are all indicators of land. The sight of these birds on long voyages must have been greeted with jubilation.
