Story: Building stone
Putaruru ignimbrite is a pinkish-red ignimbrite containing flattened glassy pumice fragments. The pumices were apparently squashed by the weight of the overlying material soon after eruption, while the ignimbrite was still hot. Putaruru ignimbrite was used in the old museum building, now part of Massey University, Wellington. It is no longer quarried.
