Story: Birdwatching

Charles Fleming

Charles Fleming

Sir Charles Fleming stands at the Waikanae estuary, north of Wellington. A keen observer of birds, he campaigned for the conservation of this wetland, important for the 60 bird species that breed there, and for migratory birds. He helped set up the Waikanae Estuary Scientific Reserve in 1987. It is bordered by a marine reserve, with Kapiti Island Nature Reserve on the far side – forming a habitat for birds and the marine life they depend on.
