Story: Biosecurity
A cow in quarantine stands in the exercise yard on Matiu/Somes Island, Wellington Harbour, in 1970. The floor is covered with heavy-duty vinyl and the yards are covered with wire mesh to keep birds out. Imported animals are still placed in quarantine to ensure that they do not carry pests or diseases, although modern quarantine locations, known as transitional facilities, are now on the mainland.
