Welcoming a weka

The weka is a native bird that had become extinct in the Whirinaki forest by the early 1900s. These school children are taking part in a formal welcome by the people of Ngāti Whare for a weka about to be reintroduced to the Whirinaki forest in 2005. The Ngāti Whare people run programmes to protect the Whirinaki Forest.
