The Manurewa

The Manurewa

Brothers Leo Walsh (born in England) and Vivian Walsh (born in New Zealand after the family emigrated) built this British-designed Howard Wright biplane from imported plans. They flew it at Auckland in early February 1911 – the first officially-recorded flight in New Zealand. This photograph, which shows Vivian in the pilot’s seat, was taken at Glencora Park in Papakura around the time of the first flight.
