Bill Whelan

Bill Whelan

Bill Whelan arrived in New Zealand in 1965, at a time when Australian immigration was increasing. An important motive for leaving Australia was to avoid conscription for the Vietnam War, but he also wanted to pursue his passion for mountaineering. He now regards himself as ‘a Pākehā’.
