During the 1880s, Auckland experienced a land boom. Speculators invested heavily in suburban subdivisions. Among those offered for sale, on the eve of the boom’s collapse, was the Hurstmere Estate at Takapuna. It included sections fronting Lake Takapuna (Pupuke).
