One Tree Hill

One Tree Hill

Maungakiekie or One Tree Hill is an Auckland landmark. Once the site of a substantial , it is visible from many parts of the city. The obelisk was erected for the city’s centenary celebrations in 1940. It was part of a bequest of Sir John Logan Campbell – one of Auckland’s founders – and commemorates his admiration for Māori. The nearby pine tree was removed in 2001, after it was damaged by Māori activists. They believed an exotic tree was inappropriate for the site.
