Story: Auckland places
The idea of a bridge across Auckland’s Waitematā Harbour was first mooted in the 1860s – but almost a century passed before the Auckland Harbour Bridge opened in 1959. The city’s distinctive ‘coat hanger’ is the longest bridge in New Zealand – and is even longer than the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
