Story: Auckland places

Station Bay pā (1st of 2)

Station Bay pā

Motutapu Island had been home to Māori for several generations before the eruption of Rangitoto about 1400 AD. Although many villages and gardens were destroyed, the eruption also provided fertile new soils, encouraging re-settlement. Archaeologists have recorded over 300 Māori sites, including headland such as this one at Station Bay.
