Queen’s Redoubt

Queen’s Redoubt

Queen’s Redoubt

Queen’s Redoubt was the military headquarters for the British invasion of the Waikato. Completed in 1862, it was among New Zealand’s largest European forts. In the winter of 1863 fighting occurred nearby, but the redoubt was never directly attacked. As the front line moved south, the number of troops stationed at the complex reduced. After the defeat of Waikato Māori, the military quit the redoubt and its buildings were sold. This 1864 poster advertises the sale of allotments around the redoubt. In 2005 the Queen’s Redoubt Trust was formed to create a heritage site and build a New Zealand wars interpretation centre.
