Julian Dashper, 'The Colin McCahons'

Julian Dashper, 'The Colin McCahons'

Julian Dashper first came to prominence with works of abstract expressionism, but in 1992 he moved firmly into the area of conceptual art by exhibiting a series of drum sets. The only paintwork was on the drum face – each was painted with the name of a prominent artist. This is the one which is named for Colin McCahon. In his self-conscious reflection on earlier artists and in his abandonment of the traditional square canvas for sculptural forms, Dashper was in tune with the direction that much artistic creativity was moving from the 1990s.
