The old homestead at Diamond Harbour, on the south side of Lyttelton Harbour, was the home of Margaret Stoddart's father, a pioneer settler in the district. Margaret herself went to Edinburgh in Scotland for schooling, and then travelled again to England and Europe to follow her artistic interests from 1897 to 1906. She had been known for her botanical illustrations, but her time away directed her towards landscape painting and exposed her to impressionism. On her return to New Zealand she painted Canterbury landscapes in strongly composed watercolours. The pleasing structure and delicate brushstrokes of this painting are typical of her work.
