George French Angas came to New Zealand for several months in the second half of 1844 and made some detailed pencil and watercolour drawings of Māori people and objects. On returning to England he prepared a volume of hand-coloured lithographs based on the earlier work. This is the title page. There is careful observation of both carving and clothing, but the faces are rather European and sentimental. In the background can be seen a lake and snowy mountains, which strengthen the picturesque feeling in the work.
