Men drinking tea, mid-19th century

Two men – one Pākehā and one Māori – drink tea and liquor and smoke pipes together in this charming amateur watercolour, probably from the 1850s. The surroundings are fairly rustic but the basic requirements for a satisfactory cup of tea and a bite to eat are present. A coffee pot rests on the mantelpiece in the background.
