Attack on Ōtuihu (1st of 4)

Attack on Ōtuihu

Following the burning of Kororāreka (Russell), a force of British soldiers and seamen led by Lieutenant-Colonel William Hulme arrived in the Bay of Islands. Its first action was this attack on Ōtuihu, the of the neutral Ngāpuhi rangatira Pōmare II. The British believed, incorrectly, that Pōmare was sheltering supporters of Ngāpuhi leader Heke Hōne Pōkai.
