English immigrants were largely responsible for the introduction of organised sport to New Zealand. Cricket began in the early years of settlement, and when the All-England team visited in 1864 they attracted a considerable number of spectators to the ‘Grand Cricket Match’ played against Canterbury in Hagley Park. England won by an innings and two runs.
