Auckland from the wharf

Auckland from the wharf

Edward Gifford painted this bustling Queens Wharf scene in 1887. As waterside workers load cargo, others promenade and converse. A paddle steamer in the foreground and new buildings along Quay Street reflect the city’s modernity and progress.
