‘Exploring party in the Wairarapa’

‘Exploring party in the Wairarapa’

The New Zealand Company sent explorers eastwards from Wellington to the Wairarapa. This 1840s watercolour by the company’s chief surveyor, William Mein Smith, shows a party on the Wairarapa plains, with Mt Holdsworth as a snowy peak in the distant Tararua Range.
