Mike Bull, scallop scientist

Mike Bull, scallop scientist

The late Dr Mike Bull, shown here with a plate of cooked scallops, was instrumental in developing profitable and sustainable scallop fisheries at Tasman Bay and Golden Bay in the 1990s. He advocated the use of enhancement techniques, whereby young scallops are collected from coastal waters, released onto established beds of scallops, and allowed to grow there for a couple of years before the bed is harvested.
