Quinnat salmon are farmed in rivers on the east coast of the South Island and in sea cages in the Marlborough Sounds, Akaroa Harbour and at Big Glory Bay, Stewart Island. From small beginnings in the early 1980s, salmon production increased steadily through to 2002. The fall in production in 2003 coincided with an increase in the global supply of farmed salmon. The data in this graph is for gilled and gutted fish.
