Story: Anglican Church

Percentage of Anglicans and other faiths

Download graph data (TXT file, 1 KB)

Because of the Church Missionary Society's early arrival, and also because most early settlers were Anglican, the Anglican Church has traditionally been New Zealand's largest by percentage of overall population. However, as this graph shows, the proportion of Anglicans in the population has dropped by more than half since the 19th century. In 2006 it was still the largest church, but only slightly ahead of the Catholics, and with a much smaller share of the New Zealand population than those who had no religion at all.
