Remembering Erebus

Soon after an Air New Zealand DC10 crashed on Mt Erebus in 1979, a simple wooden cross was placed in Antarctica in remembrance of the 257 people who were killed, but wind-driven ice gradually eroded the wood. This replacement aluminum cross was raised on Mt Erebus on the 20th anniversary of the disaster.
