Story: Africans
Mwatumn Mtengeti, a Colombo Plan student from Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, is shown a patu (Māori club) by Mrs J. Carlyon (left) at the National Publicity Studios, Wellington, in 1968. Students were among the few black Africans in New Zealand up until the 1980s. They came on scholarships, and most returned to Africa when they had completed their studies.
