Christchurch and its hinterland is a popular centre for ballooning, and some commercial companies offer early morning flights for tourists over the spectacular Canterbury Plains. It is claimed that there is no other place in the world where a balloon can take off from a city with a view of the sun rising out of the ocean, and fly towards snow-capped mountains.
