Story: Aerial recreation
During her 1894 tour of New Zealand, Leila Adair made a number of spectacular balloon ascents. On 26 May she launched her balloon from the Square in Palmerston North and rose to a height of 915 metres before drifting some 4–5 kilometres. Eventually she parachuted into sheep yards at Kairanga and 50 horsemen escorted her back to the Square. There she received an ovation from the waiting crowd.
