Story: Acclimatisation
This sign, photographed in 1939 in the Ruahine Range, outlawed deer shooting by private hunters. At the time, government cullers were trying to control the deer population, which had exploded. Pairs of hunters were assigned to areas and systematically shot every animal they could find. To prevent recreational hunters disturbing the deer before the cullers went in, the government prohibited shooting in certain areas.
