As this clip from Country calendar explains, the film-maker Vincent Ward viewed the New Zealand landscape in very unromantic ways. For his 1984 film Vigil (called here by its working title, First blood, last rites), he searched for a muddy, depressing, rundown piece of land. He found it at Uruti, in north Taranaki.
