New Zealand can be divided into nine broad zones, based on their climate, soils and vegetation. Known as ecoregions, they stretch from the humid north to the chilly subantarctic islands. Their distinctive plant life ranges from lush rainforest, to stands of alpine beech, to tussock grasslands.
