Charles Heaphy, 1820–1881

Charles Heaphy was a New Zealand Company draftsman and surveyor. He was later chief surveyor for the central government, surveying Waikato lands confiscated from Māori. His watercolours were some of the first to depict the varied New Zealand landscape.

Te Huruhuru, ?–1861
Chief of the Ngāi Tahu people living in the lower Waitaki River valley, Te Huruhuru gave European settlers detailed information about the interior of the South Island. It was from him that Edward Shortland first learnt of the large lakes in the Otago interior, and the route to them.
