Story: Ngārara – reptiles

Te Ngārara Huarau stamp

Te Ngārara Huarau stamp

This stamp, issued in 2000, shows Te Ngārara Huarau, which appears in many traditions. In some of these, it was a giant reptile that was burnt alive in a building. Part of the reptile – the tail, or the scales – escaped and became the forerunner of lizards.
