Murupaenga, ?–1826
Ngāti Whatua leader Murupaenga, with Te Roroa allies, was involved in a series of wars with the Ngāpuhi tribe in the early 19th century. He was greatly feared and respected because of his strategic abilities in battle.

Te Rarawa leader Ngā-kahu-whero inherited authority in the Hokianga area from her ancestors. As was customary, this enabled her to establish boundaries and gift land to people.

Pōmare I, ?–1826
Pōmare, originally named Whetoi, was a leader of Ngāpuhi and Ngāti Wai. In the years before European settlement he took the lead in establishing villages for his people in the Bay of Islands.
