Volcanic plug

Many of Northland’s ranges are made up of volcanic rocks, and there are some spectacular remnants of old volcanoes. Tokatoka peak near Dargaville is a volcanic plug, formed when lava solidified in the pipe of an extinct volcano. The cone has worn away, leaving the plug behind.
