‘Doctor Smith off to buy the meat’

In 1948 Canterbury artist Olivia Spencer Bower spent time at Rāwene recovering from an illness. There she made the acquaintance of local figures, including charismatic Dr George McCall Smith, and produced a series of drawings and paintings. This watercolour captures the moody atmosphere of the Hokianga.
