Katerina Nēhua, 1903–1948

Katerina Nēhua was born at Whakapara in the Bay of Islands. She became involved in the sport of endurance swimming, popular during the depression of the 1930s as a way of earning money. Later she entered endurance swimming competitions in Australia, breaking records for time spent in the water.

John Burns Smith, 1922–1974
Kaikohe-born Johnny Smith rose to rugby fame before and during the Second World War as a player for army teams, including the legendary Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force rugby team. Later he played for Northland and for the All Blacks, acquiring a reputation as an outstanding player who never lost his cool.

Thomas Clifton Webb, 1889–1962

Born into a farming family at Te Kōpuru, south-east of Dargaville, Thomas Webb became a representative rugby player and held office on rugby organisations for Auckland and Northland. He also became prominent in Northland politics, gaining the Kaipara seat after the death of Gordon Coates in 1943.
