George Bruce Bolt, 1893–1963

The development of domestic air services in Northland has been slow, but investigation of the possibilities started early. Pioneer aviator George Bolt made a record long-distance flight from Auckland to Russell in 1919, and later that year he made an experimental airmail flight from Auckland to Dargaville. In the 1920s he briefly helped run a mail service between Auckland and Whāngārei.

Alexander McGregor, 1828–1901
Alexander McGregor played a key role in the development of shipping around Northland’s coast in the 19th century. At his instigation steamships were introduced, and the Northern Steam Ship Company emerged.

Garnet Hercules Mackley, 1883–1986

Garnet Mackley, who rose to become general manager of New Zealand Railways in 1931, was Kaikohe’s first stationmaster in 1914. During the next two years he played an important part in community life. From 1916 to 1919 he was stationmaster at Onerahi, near Whāngārei.
