An airport reunion
Today immigrants from destinations throughout the world arrive in New Zealand on scheduled commercial flights, the longest of which – from Europe – takes 24 hours in total. Such journeys may be far less gruelling than the three months at sea endured by 19th-century immigrants, but they are still fatiguing. In 2004 these tired but happy refugees from Afghanistan were greeted at Auckland International Airport by relatives already living in New Zealand.
