Caledonian Society ball programme
Many patriotic Scottish societies were established in the second half of the 19th century. The social and cultural events they staged kept Scots in New Zealand aware of their traditions. When the Caledonian Society of Wellington held its first annual ball in 1887, the cover of the programme featured a border of Scotland’s national plant, the thistle.
