Alexander Bathgate, 1845–1930


After coming to New Zealand with his large family in 1863, Alexander Bathgate made his living as a lawyer and businessman, but his real passions were conservation and writing.

Laura May Cook Ingram, 1912–1994


The daughter of a Scot, Laura Ingram made her local mark as an energetic and dedicated teacher. Proud of her Scottish heritage, she served as drum major of the Motueka Ladies’ Highland Pipe Band.

Jessie Mackay, 1864–1938


The daughter of Scottish parents, Jessie Mackay earned her living as a teacher and journalist, but made her lasting mark as the writer of poetry in which her Scottish heritage is strong.
