View of Dunedin from ‘Little Paisley’
Otago was founded as a Free Church of Scotland settlement, but most of the settlers came to escape hardship or advance themselves economically rather than for religious reasons. The weaving industry in Paisley was in recession through much of the 1840s, and many left there for New Zealand, particularly Otago. A part of Dunedin became known as ‘Little Paisley’.
