Spöring Island, Tolaga Bay

Spöring Island, Tolaga Bay

Spöring Island, Tolaga Bay

The island named after the Finnish draughtsman Herman Spöring lies in Tolaga Bay, just offshore from Cook’s Cove. Today the island is known by its Māori name, Pourewa. In 1990 a rock was taken from Pourewa Island to Spöring’s birthplace in Turku, Finland, where it forms a monument to the first Finn to land in New Zealand, in 1769.
