A New Zealand scene by Nicholas Chevalier

While living in Australia in the 1860s, the Russian-born artist Nicholas Chevalier made several trips across the Tasman Sea to New Zealand. He left a memorable legacy of paintings and drawings depicting New Zealand in that decade. In 1866 he and his wife Caroline made an arduous journey through the Southern Alps that included crossings of the upper Taramakau River. This painting, ‘Crossing the Teremakau’, was completed in 1867.
