The partition of Poland
From 1795 until after the First World War, Poland did not exist as an independent nation. Between 1772 and 1795, it had been steadily divided up by Prussia and the Russian and Austro-Hungarian empires. The partition of Poland makes it difficult to determine how many Poles came to New Zealand in the 19th century, because some would have been recorded as Germans, Russians or Austro-Hungarians.
