Members of Club Italia, Nelson, 1937

Regional and kinship ties were stronger than national or patriotic ones. Italian clubs such as Auckland’s Club Italiano and Wellington’s Club Garibaldi offered local communities a place to meet, play cards and have a glass of wine. Nelson’s Club Italia celebrated spring and religious festivals and supported community activities, which helped Italians integrate into local life.
