Hugo Friedlander, 1850–1928


Ashburton-based Friedlander was a grain merchant extraordinaire. One of his major business achievements was supplying 18,000 tons of oats as horse fodder to the British government during the South African war.

Johann Friederich August Kelling, 1818–1898


Early settlers Johann Kelling (known as Fedor), his first wife Johanna and brother Carl arrived in Nelson in 1844. Kelling was a successful farmer, but had little luck in marriage – his wives kept dying on him.

Martin Krippner, 1817–1894


A soldier and teacher, Krippner was instrumental in recruiting his compatriots from Bohemia to establish a settlement at Pūhoi, north of Auckland.

Friedrich Wohnsiedler, 1879–1958


Wohnsiedler pioneered commercial winemaking in the Gisborne district.
