According to legend, the people of Te Āti Awa have both mortal and immortal origins. They are descended from Awanuiarangi, the son of a woman, Rongoueroa, and a spirit descended from the sky, Tamarau-te-heketanga-a-rangi.
In 1860 a dramatic event had a huge impact on Te Āti Awa. When the tribe’s chief, Wiremu Kīngi Te Rangitāke, refused to vacate his home after it had been sold to Europeans, the British fired the shots that were to begin the New Zealand wars.
