Pukerangiora pā

Pukerangiora pā, 6.5 km inland from Waitara, was an important Te Āti Awa site from pre-European times. It was also the site of a major battle in the New Zealand wars of the 1860s, and trenches, rifle pits and tunnels are still visible. Following the wars, Te Āti Awa’s lands were confiscated.
