Isolated high up in the rugged Urewera country, with little useable land, Ngāi Tūhoe developed a powerful connection with the mountains, forests and rivers. They say that their ancestors were Te Maunga (the Mountain) and Hine-pūkohu-rangi (the Mist Maiden) – personifications of the natural world, who brought forth the people known as Ngāi Tūhoe.
